Tuckenhay is a forgotten, sleepy place, and today it seems amazing that in 1806 it was the ambition of Mr Abraham Tucker to develop it as a major port. His plan never came to much, but the gas house he built did put the village on the map as one of the first places in England to receive gas lighting, and for many years the nearby paper mill produced paper for banknotes.
